This is an unfortunate rabbit hole my friends, because I love me some technology. I’m constantly ranting about it, tweeting about it, or manipulating in some manner. It’s certainly not lost on me that without it, this show and this site wouldn’t even exist in the first place. I’ll even go out on a limb and say technology, the insatiable, uniquely human desire to continually lift our circumstances is intimately intertwined with the ultimate destiny of mankind.

As Terence McKenna put it,
“Technology is the real skin of our species… We take in matter that has a low degree of organization; we put it through mental filters, and we extrude jewelry, gospels, space shuttles. This is what we do. We are like coral animals embedded in a technological reef of extruded psychic objects.”

Well done Terence, well god damn done.

Though McKenna’s statement is truer than ever and has come to fruition in ways even Terence’s bombastic mind couldn’t have foreseen, there’s a big, fat, elephant-in-the-room-sized aspect to this equation we’ve yet to mention– billions and billions of dollars.

When you couple our innate need to continue creating and improving with capitalism, technology goes from being an organic expression of our humanity to a commodity. Now, this isn’t always a sinister thing, but corruption has an uncanny way sliming its way into basically every system it can syphon money from. On top of that, when a corporation’s prime objective is to get as many digits and commas as they possibly can, the well-being of humans just doesn’t always harmonize with that. So when that nasty, corrupt crony-filed rot does wriggle its way into systems, we need oversight. Journalists, filmmakers, academics, objective third-parties of all stripes packing a gigantic corruption nuking spotlight.

This, my pals, is why Kevin Kunze is on the show. Kevin is the filmmaker behind Mobilize, an investigative documentary exploring the negative long-term health effects of cell phone radiation (yes, you’re probably cooking your brain and your balls right now). The film examines recent scientific research, follows national legislative efforts, and exposes the influence that technology companies have on public health.
